An update with pictures!? Impossible! Yet here it is.
Here we’re just showing some of the recent refinements to the menu and shop screens.
In other news, I’m happy to report that everything is progressing nicely. I’m pretty much done. Since I really don’t have anything else to do with the text until it gets edited, I’m just working on playtesting. I’ve already completed a full playthrough of the game and made a lot of little tweaks and looked for bugs. Kingcom is doing a great job staying on top of all of those and I’d say we’ve corrected as much in the last few weeks as we have for many months prior. Yuli is working on editing the events with much fervor. I’m really pleased with her progress. Proofreading is also moving along… I think. Subtitles are likewise progressing. Everything looks like it should be wrapping up around the same time, so I’m just trying to make sure it all comes together right.
And now to drop a bomb on some of you… Lately there have been some questions of “Will the patch work on my flashcart?” The answer? Well, it might, but it might not. Unfortunately, because of the way that flashcarts work, not all of them will work with ToI right out of the gate. Here’s the deal: Flashcarts apply patches when they load the game. The problem is that some carts apply the patches according to the CRC of the rom header. Since the patch will change the rom header, some carts won’t recognize it and there’s nothing we can do about it. Sadly, only an update from the flashcart devs will solve the problem. So now you’re all panicking and wondering if your card is among those that don’t work. Here’s what we know so far:
- CycloDS will work.
- R4 will work.
- Acekard 2s works (tested with AkAIO 1.5)
- Some Supercards WILL NOT work.
- Emulation will work.
So if you’re among those whose carts will not support the patch, I really do apologize. I wish we could do something about it, but it’s totally out of our hands. If you are in that unfortunate situation, your only options are to get a different flashcart, play the game on emulation, or convince the maker of your flashcart to update their database to support our patch. There is literally nothing we can do about it.

Will a DSTT flashcard work?
You will be shown how to patch the game when the patch comes out. You will know if your flashcard work when the patch comes out. You will find out everything when the patch comes out!!!
Do you not think it is reasonable that when the patch is released there will be clear instructions for you to patch it?
I know this may had been asked a trillion of millions of times, but, is there an expected release date? but i know you cant say anything exactly, i just wanna know if this will be availiable before this half of the year?

@Ray: u can still own the actual game and dump it as a rom then patch it. Or u can own the game and download the rom which technically means that u’re backing up ur actual copy not piracy.
@wildarms – Let’s just say that it’s probably coming out in the first semester. But life’s unpredictable, so it may come out after that. Really, who knows? All we can do is patiently wait.

Alright I’m not going to ask a release date like just about everyone else. All I want to know is if you guys are going to give a heads up before the launch like telling us a week ahead of time that its coming. Because I just wanna know when I should take some vacation time off at work ;D
@Xander6669: You’ll have advance notice. The start of the beta will be like a one month warning and then I’ll probably post another reminder a week or two before release.
Well they said early this year. So I guess we can hope it’s before summer? Worse comes to worse (like ASH’s closed beta, which looks like all progress died for some reason), maybe July?

@TALES: Well, seeing as you asked so nicely, I’m not as irritated as I have been. But no, there will be no download until the patch is completely, 100% finished. I don’t see how you managed to miss all the times throughhim413 said that. And the fact that you couldn’t find the download should have been a clue.
eh, looks like a extremely large banner in the main page is needed, saying something like “THERE’S NO PATCH YET! DON’T ASK FOR DATES EITHER, IT WILL BE OUT WHEN IT’S OUT! CHECK THE PROGRESS THREAD FOR MORE INFO”, otherwise, there’s always those guys asking ( even if they mean no harm, like TALES ).

Thoughhim take care of the updates so they are also part of his work. And it’s obvious they are responsible enough to organize a schedule so they don’t choose a thing over another. It’s a serious work, not a speedrun.

I have supercard DSONEi and supercard miniSD, I suppose that, It if works in some of them, it will be compatible with DSONEi…

Afraid not. I just felt like writing an article on romhacking. It addresses a lot of the concerns I have with the modern approach to creating a translation. Most people won’t want to read it. It’s pretty long.
Will the patch work on EDGE?
You guys say that Flashcarts apply patches when they load the game.. I suppose I see what you’re saying if you’re providing a patch file for a DS FLash cart to load.
However, I’m surprised you aren’t using a format like Byuu’s UPS and asking users to patch the NDS file on their computer. That way, any flashcart applying patches seems avoided.
I suppose from a release and legality standpoint, the flashcart taking care of soft patching may prevent any pre-patched versions from being released onto the net.
Excuse me for my ignorance of the above, btw. I rarely check into seeing if any of the “Tales Of” DS games have been translated..!
@SoreThumb: I think maybe you got the wrong idea. There are both soft patches (applied by the flashcart when the game is loaded) and hard patches (applied on the computer before loading the game to the flashcart). Our patch, a hard patch, will change the game in such a way that some carts will no longer properly apply a soft patch. That makes the game unplayable on those carts.

Hey there, long time lurker to this translation and previous donater here but I think this is my first comment or post. I’m really psyched to hear it’s nearing the final stages, and I’m so glad it’s gonna be a premium quality translation with every rough edge sanded and polished with a beautiful, professional shine.
I was curious on a rough estimate on the final product in the “couple months” or “one year” scale if you guys think you know that now. I’m not looking for the release date or anything to be annoying, just a kind of rough estimate since it’s so hard to tell timelines in translations. From this post, though, it’s feeling like it’ll be out any day. I’m really a patient person and would much rather wait years for a perfect translation than to have a poor one quick, but I’m starting to get excited for this one, hehe.
When I first found this translation’s site I was excited that perhaps it will show producers and exec’s from Namco or Nintendo that there is a fan base for Tales games, and then start actually giving us these games instead of snubbing us again and again and again and again and again. I think you guys are the only ones who would know how crushed I felt when I found out the Tales of Destiny PS2 remake was (J) only. Why announce it in all the American mags and channels only to take it from us later? Well at least we got ToS2. I’d have gone nuts if we didn’t, lol.
Well anyway, I love what you guys are doing. Sorry for the question up there, I know you probably get it every day, but I’m only curious on a rough guess like a few months or over a year. Oh and just one more, but if you don’t have an answer or can’t don’t worry that’s just fine: were you guys planning on going back to the Tales of Destiny PS2 remake after this one? Cheers~
